Memorable Quotes 2 Days Before Gustav Hits Louisiana

“I am strongly, strongly encouraging everyone in the city to evacuate,” New Orleans mayor Nagin said. “Start the process now. Go north if you can because the storm may continue to turn a little bit west.”

"If it's like Katrina, they might not let us back," says N.O. resident Beth Basile, 52, a Wal-Mart cashier. "They might put a fence around the whole parish and say, `Go away.'"

"I'm trying to be optimistic," said Gary Sass, 46, a construction worker. "But Kentucky's looking better and better."

"We've got floors — beautiful brand-new floors," said Maria DiMaggio, who is 42, disabled and sleeps in a cot in her kitchen. "I mean, my house is not even finished and, then, what? It's going to float away again?"
"I was hoping to get all the way right at least before another hurricane came and ate up my world," said DiMaggio, who lost $22,000 to unscrupulous contractors. "If I would have been in my house for a day it would have been OK. Then I could have dealt with it. ... But I can't do this again."

“I don’t want to be stuck like I was in Katrina,” said N.O. resident Janice McElveen, recalling being stranded on the Interstate 10 bridge for five days in 2005.

“After going through Katrina, that ain’t no joke,” said Jody Anderson, who spent seven days in the Superdome. “It’s not worth it, trying to stay.”

“We can save everybody this time,” Jackie Clarkson, the president of the City Council, said.

LSU Starts 2008 Campaign With Ground Game

"We ran the football like we needed to," LSU coach Les Miles said SAturday after his team easily beat Appalachian State 41-13. "We probably tried to force the pass as best we could just to get some of these young guys some experience."
With a hurricane churning toward them and all the pressure of a No. 7 ranking, the Tigers did what they had to do, racing to a 31-0 halftime lead.
Charles Scott grounded out a career-high 160 yards on 16 carries, with touchdown runs of 8 and 29 yards. He nonchalantly stated his claim to know he wants as quarterback.
"It really doesn't matter to us," Scott said. "The [offensive] line is doing great right now and they're only going to get better. Our rushing game is going to be the strength of this team and we're going to get those guys in the pocket comfortable."
"They're so athletic. It just wore on us," Appalachian State coach Jerry Moore said. "They didn't play like Michigan. They played like LSU." And they'll continue to, Jerry. They'll continue to.

EA Sports Coming to Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, LA - EA Sports likes crawfish, I guess.
The Electronic Arts Sports video gaming company is partnering with LSU to open its first testing site on a college campus within the 50 states.
The move would generate about 20 full-time jobs and hundreds of part-time opportunities. Governor Bobby Jindal signaled that the partnership could foster a seat in the digital development world for Louisiana. "We really look at this as a first step toward much bigger relationships between EA and the state of Louisiana," the governor says.

LSU Starts at No. 6

The same week rapper Snoop Dogg declared his love for LSU, the USA Today Coaches poll placed them firmly in the mix for a second consecutive national title.
National champions LSU Tigers started the preseason in the top 10 for the second year in a row, with the nation's coaches predicting that only 5 times are better than they are. Time will tell if the coaches know what they are talking about, or if they are on the wacky tobaccky. Speaking of which, Snoop snuck in on a news conference by Miles and had a few words of encouragement. “I just wanted to give my love and support to coach Miles. I met him last night," he said. Miles, who stopped by Snoop Dogg's hotel the night after returning from a quick trip to Shreveport, said he’s become a fan of the Long Beach, Calif. native through his son, Ben.
“Ben Miles is all over Snoop’s stuff,” Miles said.
“I found every guy around him is a former coach or player, and he runs a league of youth football and provides opportunities for young people.
“I defend his music, and am much more a fan of the person.”
Of course, Snoop, a huge USC fan, will still be routing for the Trojans should the Tigers and USC meet on the road to the title. But the title is a long way off, let's just enjoy the preseason speculation.
The top 25 reads like an SEC and Big Ten gamebook.
